Wicked 10K Commemorative Prints

A marathon photo capturing and printing company wanted to personalize the visuals on plaques for all of their races. Up to this point, the only races that got specific themed imagery were the extremely large ones (i.e. Boston Marathon)

One of the specific races was the Wicked 10K and Monster Mile which is a halloween themed race in Virginia Beach. I was requested to design three different illustrations that would be used on different commemorative print options that runners could purchase after the event.

Witch’s Brew Illustration

I sketched various options and explored different themes associated with halloween. I was trying to take them a small step further than being just traditional halloween imagery and landed on this concept for one of the print options. The full illustration is where I experimented with color, texture, and other visual effects prior to extracting key pieces that would be used in the final commemorative print.

This is a mockup of what the print frame looks like without a runner’s image in it. The runner would select a photo of theirs to be printed in this frame to remember the event. I simplified the color and textures within the file to make printing easier and appeal to a broader audience of attendees.

Upon designing this piece, space had to be heavily considered based on the companies’ printing standards. The race logo had to be easily incorporated as well as have plenty of room to add the runners name and running time above the logo.

Commemorative Photo Prints and Plaques:

This is the full set of photo prints that were made for this race. These frames accommodate either 5 x 7 inch or 8 x 10 inch photographs. All assets were made me, most being drawn in illustrator with textures applied in photograph. The photograph of the moon was taken by me as well, with various textures applied to it in photoshop. My goal was to provide variety in these designs so runners could choose their favorite when ordering images. All were made based on the manufacturer’s specifications, primarily focused on leaving room for the runner’s name and running time.
